Professionally, Marian Newman has worked in almost every area of the nail industry. Starting by opening a salon in 1987, she progressed into training and worked with Creative Nail Design from around 1989 for several years including attending many ‘boot camps’ in the UK and US.
Marian did consultative work for some of the largest nail companies in the UK and, at one time, as a qualified teacher, was responsible for training programs for several thousand people across the UK and Europe. She also developed many brands for both professional and consumer use from their inception and concept stages to involvement in bringing them to market.
Interesting points of her career to date include the establishment of the first Urban Retreat nail bar in Harvey Nicholls as well as those in the Sanctuary Spas and was involved as consultant for Charles Worthington and Nails Inc.
Marian has represented the professional nails industry on the board of the British Industry Authority (BIA) now known as Habia (to incorporate Hairdressing) since its inception and currently holds the post of Chairperson of the Nails Services Forum. She has been involved in the development of Vocational Standards since they started in the early ‘90’s. She was also a seasoned presenter on QVC bringing nails into thousands of people’s sitting rooms every month.
She has many column inches under her belt. Apart from regularly contributing to the trade press, her expert knowledge has been utilized by print and broadcast media alike. (Credited as a ‘super-manicurist’ in the 21st Century Beauty Bible by Jo Fairley and Sarah Stacey and being described by Tatler as: “Marian Newman is to nails what Karl Lagerfeld is to frocks.” The Times online: “Forensic scientist turned nail guru to Kate Moss and Keira Knightly, Marian Newman is to pedicures what Heston Blumenthal is to fish and chips”.)
Marian has also written the definitive guide for the budding nail practitioner, The Complete Nail Technician published September 2001. A new, expanded edition was published in September 2004, it is the textbook for the new qualifications in Nail Services that came into effect that year and has gone into its 6th reprint. The 3rd edition is being written at the moment. It is sold worldwide and has 54,000 references in Google.
Her session work is a major part of Marian’s life, having become the name that famous photographer Nick Knight calls upon to do his Dior, Lancome and Vogue shoots. Working closely with Sam McKnight, Val Garland and many others, Marian now commands an unrivalled position in her industry and is one of the few top nail practitioners whose work is seen in glossy magazines around the world virtually every week. She has worked with most of the legendary photographers, including Mario Testino, David Bailey and Patrick Demarchelier.
Some career highlights in this field are over 50 British Vogue covers to her name (plus many 100’s covers and editorial stories) and 10 years of working on every advertising campaign for Christian Dior. More recently, she created the nails on all the ‘Interlude’ films for Lady Gaga’s Monster Tour.
There have been ‘Marian Newman Nails’ at many, many fashion shows and other events in London and Paris, such as Givenchy, Vivienne Westwood, Valentino, Moschino, McQueen, Fashion Rocks (with 150 models and 19 artists and bands) and the Alexander McQueen/Amex show. Marian’s very first fashion show was to create 12” spiral nails for McQueen at Givenchy and was so very fortunate to have created outstanding nails for his final show, S/S ’10.
Some of the celebrities for whom she has worked her particular magic include: Kate Moss, Giselle, Geri Halliwell, Nicole Kidman, Bjork, John Galliano, Liberty Ross, Sienna Miller, Rachel Weiss, Natalie Portman, Heather Mills-MacCartney, Linda Evangelista, Gwen Stefani, Cindy Crawford, Riley Keogh, Terri Hatcher, Kate Winslet, Charlotte Rampling, Juliette Binoche, Kate Blanchette, Gynneth Paltrow, Keira Knightly, Kylie, Naomi Campbell and P Diddy! To name but a few.
Now, Marian continues her sessions work and has a ‘sessions team’ administered by her agents, Streeters.
In 2008 Marian launched a small, niche and totally innovative nail colour and accessories range. The beauty press loved it for it genuine newness and ultimate speed and, for the first time, a whole page in British Vogue was dedicated to a nail technician.
In December 2009 she was photographed by Nick Knight as part of 100 Portraits of London’s Beau Monde as part of a live project at Somerset House and for a later edition of i-D. Marian was also interviewed on SHOWstudio as part of the ‘In Fashion’ project. There are a few short videos on this site shot personally by Marian by invitation of Nick Knight.
